What 49g means
A pair of ordinary prescription glasses weighs roughly 20–30g; sunglasses land around 40–50g. At 49g including battery, an AR device enters the same weight class as regular eyewear for the first time — the precondition for frontline staff wearing it all day.
That number is not bought with materials. It is the solution to three constraints solved simultaneously.
Three variables pulling against each other
- Optics: a diffractive waveguide must hold 85% transmittance while reaching over 1000 nits for outdoor readability, which pushes up both optical engine volume and power draw.
- Power: more compute and a brighter display drain the battery faster. With capacity fixed, endurance must be recovered through system-level low-power design and task scheduling.
- Thermals: power eventually leaves as heat, and glasses sit against skin, where the acceptable temperature rise is far lower than for a phone.
Relax any one of them and total weight springs back.
Imperceptibility is the finish line
Industry discussion of lightweighting usually stops at grams, but what decides a product is whether you still want it on your face after two hours. That involves weight distribution, nose-pad pressure and temple clamping force, as well as the perceived warmth after prolonged use.
Specs can be inflated; experience cannot. This is why we evaluate terminals on continuous wear time rather than peak compute.
